Obama presses ailing Europe to focus on growth

CAMP DAVID, Maryland (Reuters) - A growing chorus of world leaders on Friday pushed for a shift toward more pro-growth policies to help ease a European crisis that threatens to oust Greece from the euro zone and reverberate throughout the global economy.

Setting the tone for a weekend G8 summit, President Barack Obama aligned himself with the new French president's drive for more economic stimulus in recession-plagued Europe, in a swipe at the tough austerity programs that have been spearheaded by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Obama's stance reflects his worries that the euro zone contagion, which threatens the future of Europe's 17-nation single currency, could hurt the fragile U.S. economic recovery and his own re-election chances in November.

The Camp David summit kicked off four days of intensive diplomacy - including a NATO meeting in Obama's home town of Chicago - that will test leaders' ability to quell unease over the threat of another financial meltdown as well as plans to wind down the unpopular war in Afghanistan.

After White House talks with French President Francois Hollande, Obama said the two agreed that tackling the euro-zone crisis was "an issue of extraordinary importance, not only to the people of Europe, but also to the world economy."

"We're looking forward to a fruitful discussion later this evening and tomorrow with the other G8 leaders about how we can manage a responsible approach to fiscal consolidation that is coupled with a strong growth agenda," Obama said before flying to Camp David and greeting fellow leaders for an opening dinner.

Merkel, who has insisted on the need for tough fiscal discipline to bring down suffocating debt levels even as angry voters have toppled some euro zone governments, seemed certain to find herself increasingly alone.

As Obama welcomed his guests one-by-one outside a rustic lodge at the presidential retreat in Maryland, he asked Merkel: "How have you been?"

She shrugged and offered a strained smile. "Well, you have a few things on your mind," he said in a brief exchange captured by a boom microphone.

Her predicament could be underscored in the summit's final communique that, according to a draft shown to Reuters, will stress "our imperative to create growth and jobs."

GREECE MUST "MAKE UP THEIR MINDS"

Reflecting growing frustration as Greece's post-election turmoil shakes global markets, British Prime Minister David Cameron called on euro members for decisive action and said the Greeks must "make their minds up" whether to stay in the euro zone.

No major economic policy decisions are expected from the talks but Obama will urge the Europeans to work harder at forging a comprehensive approach to their debt troubles.

World stocks fell to levels below where they began the year, depressed by the prospect that a Greek euro exit would spread upheaval in the currency bloc and engulf much larger economies such as Spain's.

The European Union's trade commissioner said for the first time that European officials were working on contingency plans in case Greece bombs out of the euro zone.

While Obama and Hollande found common ground on economics, their meeting also showed differences over France's commitment to the NATO military mission in Afghanistan, which will be the focus of the alliance's summit in Chicago starting on Sunday.

Hollande, a socialist sworn in this week as president, told Obama he would stick by his campaign pledge to withdraw French combat troops from Afghanistan by year's end, earlier than the alliance's 2014 timetable. But Hollande said France would continue to support the NATO effort in a "different way.

U.S. officials hope to convince Hollande to rethink the French pullout plan.

GERMANY 'QUITE ISOLATED'

But the two leaders, meeting for the first time since Hollande's election victory earlier this month, were more in sync on the euro zone crisis.

Hollande said he spoke to Obama about the need to put a priority on growth, and that they also agreed it was important to find a way for Greece to stay in the euro zone.

Obama's administration spent heavily to try to tackle the 2007-2009 U.S. recession, and has long urged Europeans to do more to boost growth. Hollande is seeking to take the edge off austerity with more job-creating infrastructure investments.

Like Cameron, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been a frequent critic of euro zone G8 members' handling of their debt woes. Italian premier Mario Monti was calling for growth measures even before Hollande did.

That could leave Merkel, who has used Germany's status as Europe's biggest economy to pressure others to keep a tight rein on debt, cutting a lonely figure at Camp David.

"Germany is absolutely quite isolated," said Domenico Lombardi, a former International Monetary Fund official who now is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank.

Lombardi said that while Germany had the upper hand when controlling debt was the focus, "it is now clear that Greece has become a systemic crisis" and this must now become the center of the debate.

A SOFTER APPROACH

While Merkel wants Greece's continued membership in the euro zone tied to Athens meeting tough austerity measures laid out in its bailout program, Hollande was seeking a softer approach.

Hollande also said he favors Europe recapitalizing Spain's troubled banks, which would mark a significant shift toward Europe taking over wider responsibilities from individual nations.

Backing calls for a concerted effort to boost economic activity, Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, said there was a need to promote growth while putting public finances in order and this should be center stage at the summit. He insisted, however, that "we want Greece to stay in the euro area."

The G8 summit comes as Greeks are pulling cash from banks amid growing fears about its euro zone membership. Financial markets are deeply concerned about the future of the entire currency zone, with Spain's banking sector also under pressure.

Nearly two thirds of Greeks voted on May 6 for parties of the radical left and far right which oppose the austere terms of an EU/IMF assistance program. Talks failed to avert a repeat election, which is now set for June 17.

The "balanced approach" that Obama is pushing for in the euro zone is similar to his domestic efforts combining short-term stimulus and longer-term cuts to try to heal the U.S. economy and stoke hiring that has not recovered from the financial crisis. But the U.S. economy continues to struggle, posing problems for Obama's re-election.

Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee to face Obama in the November 6 election, has made reducing the U.S. debt load, which has escalated during Obama's tenure, one of his key campaign messages.

Also on the G8 agenda will be the price of oil. Obama may secure support to essentially pre-authorize a release of strategic oil reserves later this summer, just as U.S. and European sanctions on Iran come into force -- this despite Brent crude hitting a 2012 low on Friday.

While the secluded Camp David setting discouraged protests nearby, an estimated 2,500 people demonstrated peacefully in a downtown Chicago plaza under the watchful eye of police, chanting mostly about economic issues that have little to do with the coming NATO summit.

New clues on how ApoE4 affects Alzheimer's risk

ScienceDaily (May 16, 2012) ? Common variants of the ApoE gene are strongly associated with the risk of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease, but the gene's role in the disease has been unclear. Now, researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health have found that in mice, having the most risky variant of ApoE damages the blood vessels that feed the brain.

The researchers found that the high-risk variant, ApoE4, triggers an inflammatory reaction that weakens the blood-brain barrier, a network of cells and other components that lines brain's brain vessels. Normally, this barrier allows nutrients into the brain and keeps harmful substances out.

The study appeared May 16 in Nature, and was led by Berislav Zlokovic, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Neurodegeneration and Regeneration at the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

"Understanding the role of ApoE4 in Alzheimer's disease may be one of the most important avenues to a new therapy," Dr. Zlokovic said. "Our study shows that ApoE4 triggers a cascade of events that damages the brain's vascular system," he said, referring to the system of blood vessels that supply the brain.

The ApoE gene encodes a protein that helps regulate the levels and distribution of cholesterol and other lipids in the body. The gene exists in three varieties. ApoE2 is thought to play a protective role against both Alzheimer's and heart disease, ApoE3 is believed to be neutral, and ApoE4 confers a higher risk for both conditions. Outside the brain, the ApoE4 protein appears to be less effective than other versions at clearing away cholesterol; however, inside the brain, exactly how ApoE4 contributes to Alzheimer's disease has been a mystery.

Dr. Zlokovic and his team studied several lines of genetically engineered mice, including one that lacks the ApoE gene and three other lines that produce only human ApoE2, ApoE3 or ApoE4. Mice normally have only a single version of ApoE. The researchers found that mice whose bodies made only ApoE4, or made no ApoE at all, had a leaky blood-brain barrier. With the barrier compromised, harmful proteins in the blood made their way into the mice's brains, and after several weeks, the researchers were able to detect loss of small blood vessels, changes in brain function, and a loss of connections between brain cells.

"The study demonstrates that damage to the brain's vascular system may play a key role in Alzheimer's disease, and highlights growing recognition of potential links between stroke and Alzheimer's-type dementia," said Roderick Corriveau, Ph.D., a program director at NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which helped fund the research. "It also suggests that we might be able to decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease among ApoE4 carriers by improving their vascular health."

The researchers also found that ApoE2 and ApoE3 help control the levels of an inflammatory molecule called cyclophilin A (CypA), but ApoE4 does not. Levels of CypA were raised about five-fold in blood vessels of mice that produce only ApoE4. The excess CypA then activated an enzyme, called MMP-9, which destroys protein components of the blood-brain barrier. Treatment with the immunosuppressant drug cyclosporine A, which inhibits CypA, preserved the integrity of the blood-brain barrier and lessened damage to the brain. An inhibitor of the MMP-9 enzyme had similar beneficial effects. In prior studies, inhibitors of this enzyme have been shown to reduce brain damage after stroke in animal models.

"These findings point to cyclophilin A as a potential new drug target for Alzheimer's disease," said Suzana Petanceska, Ph.D., a program director at NIH's National Institute on Aging (NIA), which also funded Dr. Zlokovic's study. "Many population studies have shown an association between vascular risk factors in mid-life, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and the risk for Alzheimer's in late-life. We need more research aimed at deepening our understanding of the mechanisms involved and to test whether treatments that reduce vascular risk factors may be helpful against Alzheimer's."

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older adults, and affects more than 5 million Americans. A hallmark of the disease is a toxic protein fragment called beta-amyloid that accumulates in clumps, or plaques, within the brain. Gene variations that cause higher levels of beta-amyloid are associated with a rare type of Alzheimer's that appears early in life, between age 30 and 60.

However, it is the ApoE4 gene variant that is most strongly tied to the more common, late-onset type of Alzheimer's disease. Inheriting a single copy of ApoE4 from a parent increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease by about three-fold. Inheriting two copies, one from each parent, increases the risk by about 12-fold.

Dr. Zlokovic's study and others point to a complex interplay between beta-amyloid and ApoE4. On the one hand, beta-amyloid is known to build up in and damage blood vessels and cause bleeding into the brain. On the other hand, Dr. Zlokovic's data suggest that ApoE4 can damage the vascular system independently of beta-amyloid. He theorizes that this damage makes it harder to clear beta-amyloid from the brain. Some therapies under investigation for Alzheimer's focus on destroying amyloid plaques, but therapies designed to compensate for ApoE4 might help prevent the plaques from forming, he said.

This research was funded by grant NS034467 from NINDS, and grants AG023084, AG039452 and AG013956 from NIA.

HBT: Lawrie appeals, not really sorry for 'bad hop'

There?s a side to Brett Lawrie?s story.

That?s what he said after appealing the four-game suspension handed down by MLB on Wednesday. Lawrie, of course, spiked and hit umpire Bill Miller with his helmet during Tuesday?s game.

And he?s not really sorry about it.

?The only thing I regret is the helmet hitting him,? Lawrie said. ?I never meant to do that and it shows. I threw it off the ground, it took a bad hop and it hit him totally by accident. I never meant to throw it at him. As that?s coming across, it seems like a lot of people are saying that I threw it at him, I never threw it at him. I never had any intentions of hurting anybody. I was just frustrated at the play at the time and that?s baseball for you.?

Of course, the bad hop comment is ridiculous. Whether Lawrie meant to hit him or not, the helmet bounced exactly the way it should have given the way he threw it. Lawrie probably didn?t intend to hurt anyone, but he was out of control and nothing so far suggests that he?s learned anything from it.

Life and Business Advice for the New Graduate | Single & Happy

Another guest post at Bitch Magazine:

I haven?t donned a cap and gown of my own for a little while, but as a self-help and business book nerd, all the great career advice dispensed around this year keeps my Instapaper account busy.

There?s business advice hidden in funny books like Tina Fey?s Bossypants (paraphrase: If there?s someone you dislike at your office and they don?t have the power to change your fate, ignore them and move on) or even in general life advice books like Katie Couric?s The Best Advice I Ever Got. Here?s one of my favorite quotes from Couric: ?I realized that whatever your path, whatever your calling, the most damaging thing you can do is let other voices define you and drown out your own. You?ve got to block them out and find that place deep inside you, shaken but still intact, and hold on to it.?

What?s the most useful career advice anyone ever gave you? Here?s my best shot at dispensing words of wisdom that I wish someone had told me when I entered the workforce but I didn?t know until later. Feel free to add some to the comments. I?m sure me and my imaginary boo, Ryan Gosling, are missing something.

I know. I had to add Ryan Gosling in there somewhere.

Here are some of my favorite tips:

6. Don?t date in the office. What? I know. Hot. Right there. Where you spend all your waking hours. Down GIRL! (And by date, I mean whatever it is you think I mean by date.) Certainly, there are all kinds of excuses you can make to say why this is wrongheaded. I know a lot of couples who met at the office. Don?t crap where you sleep. It rarely ends well.

7. Ask for what you want. Like my imaginary honey Ryan suggests above, asking for a raise or a promotion is something that you should totally do. Lois Frankel gives great advice about this, as does Austin-based career coach Ann Daly. It?s scary, but scared money don?t make none. In other words, the worst that could happen is that your boss will say no to whatever you?re asking for.

8. Try to forget ?What I Thought I?d Be Doing? and enjoy the ride. Aim to enjoy where you are. Everyone has to start somewhere.

9. Save Money. I used to have a really silly relationship with money, shaped by growing up without much. Interviewing wise people over the years has underscored for me the importance of having a stash saved in the event that I need to leave a toxic or untenable situation and regroup.

10. Win. I used to hate attention and I would unconsciously sabotage myself, thinking that if I won all the time, people would hate me for it. Specifically, ?boys club? women and intimidated men. It turns out winning is sexy. It also makes you happy and confident, which gives your skin a healthy glow. Go for it.

If you have some, I?d love to hear it.

Rookie picks law school over NFL, concussions

After starting at linebacker the past two seasons for Ohio State, Andrew Sweat decided football wasn't worth it -- literally.

Despite signing as an undrafted rookie with the Cleveland Browns and attending their minicamp this spring, Sweat quickly reversed course to pursue law school.

He tweeted Monday: "Concussion symptoms didn't want to risk it.. Thanks to the browns for the opportunity. Health trumps football any day"

Sweat's decision was panned by the website Deadspin, which advised him to pursue the six-figure salary afforded to undrafted rookies who stick on NFL rosters rather than the hardships and frequent debts associated with law school, especially since it seems he's not ticketed for a Tier 1 program.

That elicited another tweet from Sweat:

@Deadspin might need to get facts right. "good setup" my dad has a very successful law firm think I'm okay here..

Seems like a mature and reasonable decision from our section of the cheap seats.

Panasonic's Let's Note J10 netbook promises over 12 hours of battery life, available now in Japan

Panasonic intros Let's Note J10 netbook in Japan, pricing starts at 120,000 yen

To pair nicely alongside that beastly Let's Note B11 we showed you last week, Panasonic's now also selling its J10 netbook series in Japan. Aesthetically speaking, the new Let's Note J10 isn't much different than its predecessor, the J9, though it has changed a bit (as expected) in the specs department. The entry level 10.1-inch (1366 x 768) J10 gets you Intel's Core i3-2350M CPU with 320GB of hard drive storage as well as 4GB of RAM, while the higher-end model sports an i7-2640M chip (sorry, no Ivy Bridge here), up to 8GB of memory and you can choose between a 256GB SSD or a 1TB HDD. Additionally, each unit's packing a hefty amount of ports, including two USB 2.0, one USB three-dot-oh and an HDMI out. Those looking to grab one of these J10s best have deep wallets, as pricing ranges from 120,000 yen (about $1,500) all the way up to around 267,000 yen.

'The Avengers' Rules At Box Office, Joins $1 Billion Club

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's 'Dark Shadows' debuts at a distant #2.

The Avengers isn't the only club to count Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the rest of the crew as members. Earth's Mightiest Heroes joined the $1 billion club over the weekend, shattering more box-office records and collecting enough cash to put it just behind "Alice in Wonderland" on the all-time worldwide gross list. "Dark Shadows," Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton's first collaboration since "Alice," settled for a distant #2 debut.

"The Avengers" reached the $1 billion mark as quickly as "Avatar" and the last "Harry Potter" movie, despite opening earlier overseas than in America. Marvel's action-packed tentpole (which unites several of their heroes) already broke the all-time opening weekend record when it opened last weekend, and with its $103.2 million estimated domestic gross this weekend, "The Avengers" is now the record holder for the biggest second-weekend number too. Thanks to its $628.9 million 19-day international haul, "The Avengers" is now one of only 11 movies to climb past the $1 billion mark worldwide.

Marvel's first movie under the Disney umbrella benefited from its comic book origins, repeat viewings, a positively reviewed story from director/co-writer Joss Whedon and the combined star power of folks like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. Truthfully, "Dark Shadows" never stood a chance. The eighth collaboration between Depp and Burton — a campy take on a decades-old low-budget vampire soap opera — made $28.8 million domestically during its first weekend in theaters. By comparison, Depp and Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" opened with $116.1 million two years ago.

"Think Like a Man," which previously enjoyed two weekends atop the box office prior to the arrival of "The Avengers," was #3 over the weekend with $6.3 million. Based on the self-help book from comedian Steve Harvey, "Think" has earned $81.9 million against a reported budget of just $12 million. "The Hunger Games" was #4 with $4.4 million, for a domestic total of $386.9 million. "The Lucky One" was #5 with $4.1 million for a $53.7 million total.

Fox Searchlight's "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" did well with a modest expansion in theater counts, generating a healthy $2.7 million in 178 locations. "Girl in Progress" debuted with $1.4 million in 322 locations. Oscar winner "The Artist" went through one more expansion, in an apparent attempt to cash in on the Mother's Day holiday, but failed to generate new buzz with a paltry $214 per screen average.

Next weekend, Sacha Baron Cohen will go up against "The Avengers" in his role as a fictitious world leader in "The Dictator." The big-budget action flick "Battleship" will also arrive as well as a bit of counter-programming in the form of "What to Expect When You're Expecting," featuring an ensemble that includes Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks and Anna Kendrick.

Check out everything we've got on "Marvel's The Avengers," "Dark Shadows" and "The Hunger Games."

Jennifer Hudson "Grateful" for Murder Trial Verdict

William Balfour has been convicted, and Jennifer Hudson's family can finally get some closure. On Friday, a jury found the singer's ex-brother-in-law guilty of first-degree murder in the 2008 deaths of Jennifer's mother Darnell Donerson, brother Jason Hudson and 7-year-old nephew Julian King. Besides the three shootings, 31-year-old Balfour was found guilty of home invasion, burglary, kidnapping and possession of a stolen vehicle. Not surprisingly, he is facing life in prison.

No More Beating Around The Bush At Yahoo: Thompson Is Out, Levinsohn In As CEO, Effective Immediately

Yahoo has now officially confirmed the news we reported earlier: Ross Levinsohn is now interim Chief Executive Officer, replacing Scott Thompson, and Fred Amoroso is chairman of the board. Scott Thompson's departure and the reasons for it are not mentioned at all in the statement, which simply says he has left the company. (Earlier a report in AllThingsD had said he would resign for personal reasons, although at least in this statement nothing at all is mentioned for why he has left.) The announcement from Yahoo also underscores how activist shareholder Third Point is very much the key player in all of this.

Planetary wrecking balls: how Jupiter might have destroyed Earth

'Hot Jupiters' are Jupiter-mass planets orbiting close to stars. A study suggests that they might have been kicked inward from their original orbit, destroying or ejecting other planets.?

It's lonely, being a hot Jupiter.

But that seems to be the lot for Jupiter-scale extrasolar planets orbiting within a whisker of sun-like stars, according to a new study. It shows that such planets are likely to be the only surviving children of their host star.

The work not only sheds light on how such systems form, it also gives humans one more reason to appreciate their own Jupiter. Had the solar system's largest planet followed the same developmental process that hot Jupiters apparently have, Earth would have been either pulverized or sent hurtling into interstellar space.

?That would be bad for us,? observes Jason Steffen, a researcher at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory's Center for Particle Astrophysics in Batavia, Ill.

While finding an Earth-mass planet in a star's so-called habitable zone remains the holy grail of efforts to detect extrasolar planets, studying oddballs such as hot Jupiters provides insights into the processes that create the wide range of solar-system configurations researchers have so far uncovered.

The study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, aimed to answer a question astronomers and astrophysicists have been asking since the first hot Jupiter was discovered in 1995: How do such systems wind up with that configuration?

Gas giants orbiting other stars at distances that would fall well inside of Mercury's orbit were the first extrasolar planets discovered. Because of their mass and their close-in orbit, hot Jupiters' effects on their parent stars are more pronounced than in other systems. Once researchers had identified these planets as gas giants, the chin-scratching began.

In our solar system, Jupiter and the other outer gas planets formed beyond what researchers have dubbed the solar system's frost line: a region in the early sun's disk of dust and gas where water, ammonia, methane, and other hydrogen-bearing compounds freeze into ice grains. Inside the frost line, the rocky planets formed.

Two competing scenarios emerged to explain how Jupiter-like gas giants migrated inward. The new report has led one team member to come to a definitive conclusion in the debate. ?

The earliest explanation suggested that a hot Jupiter forms beyond the frost line, but gravity from a passing star, or perhaps another massive companion planet, kicks the Jupiter into a highly elliptical orbit around its star. Each time the planet passes close to the star, its orbit is gradually reshaped until the orbit is far less elliptical orbit and so close that its ?year? can be as fast as 19 hours.

Isis bolsters its mobile wallet with American Express cards

The carrier-backed Isis mobile payment service added a batch of new financial partners earlier this year, and it's now back with another fairly big addition. The venture announced today that it has brought American Express' various credit card offerings into the fold (including the company's own mobile-linked Serve cards), which will let users of those cards load them into the Isis app and make payments with their NFC-equipped smartphone -- when the service begins its rollout this summer, that is. As you may recall, American Express itself had already signed on as an Isis partner last year, but this is the first time that the company has committed to tying its cards to the platform -- which is a rather important little detail.

Jawbone Big Jambox

Last year, headset vet Jawbone stepped into the wireless speaker market with the Jambox ($199.99, 3.5 stars), a portable Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a speakerphone accessory. Now, the company is taking the idea and making it bigger with the Big Jambox ($299.99 direct), a larger, heavier, and more-powerful speaker. For $100 more, it bumps the Jambox up from a good portable personal speaker to one that could easily drive a small party or handle a conference call for a large group. The sound quality isn't quite as clear and robust as what you get with the Editors' Choice Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95, 4 stars), but a long battery life and a handy speakerphone feature make the Big Jambox a top choice if you're looking for a wireless speaker to take with you.

Design
Like the Jambox before it, the Big Jambox is a blocky brick of a speaker. It measures 3.6 by 10.1 by 3.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.2 pounds, dwarfing the Jambox 's 6.0 by 2.2 by 1.6 inches and 12 ounces. (In the photo below, the original Jambox is on the left.) Available in red, black, or white, the speaker is surrounded by a metal grille, and slightly rubberized panels on the left and right sides help protect it in transit. It features most of its controls on its top side, including Playback and Volume buttons along with a Jawbone button for accessing various smart features including voice dialing and battery status. The right side holds a Power button and button for Bluetooth pairing, plus a 3.5mm output, microUSB port, and a power plug connector.

Pairing a smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth device with the Big Jambox is simple. When you first turn on the speaker it will automatically enter pairing mode, and after you've paired it with one device you can pair it with additional devices by holding the pairing button. You can also connect an audio device directly to the Big Jambox through the 3.5mm input with the included cable. The microUSB port is solely for updating the Big Jambox's software, since unlike the Jambox, which charged via USB, it has a dedicated power jack and AC adapter. As a Bluetooth device, the range of the speaker is about 30 feet. According to Jawbone, the Big Jambox can last up to 15 hours on a single charge, much longer than, say, the Bose SoundLink, which is rated to last eight hours at moderate listening levels. I ran all of my tests on the Big Jambox, and after three days it still said the battery is "about full." It actually said that. Pressing the Jambox button summons a female robotic voice that can tell you battery status.

Jawbone Big Jambox

Performance
The Big Jambox sounds clear, and its larger size and more power lets it get much louder than the Jambox. I filled the 5,000-square-foot PC Lab with music by cranking the volume to max, and while my fellow editors preferred "Bye Bye Birdie" to Glenn Benton, most everyone heard both the show tunes and death metal. Vocals and strings sounded crisp but slightly bright, and midrange notes were full and accurate.

Our bass test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," sounded deep and forceful. The low end sounded slightly crunchy, and other bass-heavy songs like the Beastie Boys' "Shake Your Rump" distorted slightly when the volume was turned up to maximum level. The Big Jambox is still a portable speaker, though, so don't expect driving sound to rock a room. It can deliver music to a small party, but it won't compete with a larger iPod dock or a full sound system.

In my test calls with an Apple iPhone 4S, voice call quality was clear, and the 360-degree microphone and larger size of the Big Jambox make it great for conference calls. Voices are picked up by the speaker easily at normal levels, and callers can be heard very loudly with the volume turned up.?

The Jawbone Big Jambox doesn't quite deliver the power and clarity of our Editors' Choice wireless portable speaker, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker, and it's three times more expensive than some other wireless options like the Logitech Mini Boombox ($99.99, 4 stars), but it works well as a speakerphone and boasts a long battery life, which is key for a portable speaker. The Beats By Dre Beatbox Portable ($449.95, 3.5 stars) offers stronger audio quality given its larger size, but it requires six D-cell batteries to be portable. If you value flexibility over audiophile-grade sound quality, the Big Jambox should be at the top of your list.
