Risk Of Diabetes In Women Increased By Chemicals In Personal Care

Article Date: 16 Jul 2012 ? 1:00 PDT

A study lead by researchers from Brigham and Women?s Hospital (BWH) shows an association between increased concentrations of phthalates in the body and an increased risk of diabetes in women. Phthalates are endocrine disrupting chemicals that are commonly found in personal care products such as moisturizers, nail polishes, soaps, hair sprays and perfumes. They are also used in adhesives, electronics, toys and a variety of other products. This finding is published online in Environmental Health Perspectives

Researchers, lead by Tamarra James-Todd, PhD, a researcher in the Division of Women?s Health at BWH, analyzed urinary concentrations of phthalates in 2,350 women who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. They found that women with higher levels of phthalates in their urine were more likely to have diabetes. Specifically:

  • Women who had the highest levels of the chemicals mono-benzyl phthalate and mono-isobutyl phthalate had almost twice the risk of diabetes compared to women with the lowest levels of those chemicals.
  • Women with higher than median levels of the chemical mono-(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate had approximately a 60 percent increased risk of diabetes.
  • Women with moderately high levels of the chemicals mono-n-butyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate had approximately a 70 percent increased risk of diabetes.

The study population consisted of a representative sample of American women and was controlled for socio-demographic, dietary and behavioral factors. However, the women self-reported their diabetes and researchers caution against reading too much into the study due to the possibility of reverse causation.

?This is an important first step in exploring the connection between phthalates and diabetes,? said Dr. James-Todd. ?We know that in addition to being present in personal care products, phthalates also exist in certain types of medical devices and medication that is used to treat diabetes and this could also explain the higher level of phthalates in diabetic women. So overall, more research is needed.?

Bankruptcy reform for student loans

Student loans, while might help students obtain an education, are inherently part of a capitalistic system whose primary objective is generating profit for their investors.? American consumers owe more than $150 billion in outstanding private student loan debt (department of education report). Some students who graduate with enormous amount of none dis-chargeable student loans are effectively in an indentured servitude to these institution.

Student loan financing is fueled by investor appetite for asset-backed securities. The financial institution private student loan market grew from less than $5 billion in 2001 to over $20 billion in 2008. From 2005 ? 2007, lenders increasingly marketed and disbursed loans directly to students, reducing the involvement of schools in the process; indeed during this period, the percentage of loans to undergraduates made without school involvement or certification of need grew from 40% to over 70%. As a result, many students borrowed more than they needed to finance their education. Additionally, during this period, lenders were more likely to originate loans to borrowers with lower credit scores than they had previously been. These trends made private student loans riskier for consumers and more profitable to creditors who have banked heavily on the fact that student loans are not discharged in bankruptcy.

After 2008 lenders rapidly increased the share of loans with a co-signer, from 67% in 2008 to over 85% in 2009. Creditors preyed on the uninformed parents to further secure their capital investment. In 2011, over 90% of private student loans were co-signed.

Many private student loan borrowers did not exhaust their federal Stafford Loan limits before turning to the private loan product. Some borrowers reported that they did not know they had fewer options when repaying their private student loans than they did with their federal student loans.

The private student loan industry is not some benevolent institution for providing opportunity to education, they are a money making machine whose sole objective if profit. They do not deserve any special protection that may be available to the federal student loan system.

Francis Beckett ? Tribune ? Comment, news and reviews from ...

One of the many benefits I discovered when I left the Roman Catholic Church is that we atheists are not expected to believe in the infallibility of Richard Dawkins. So when Professor Dawkins said that calling a child a Christian just because the parents are Christian is a form of child abuse, I dissented. No move for my excommunication was made in the British Humanist Association. Keith Wood, who runs the National Secular Society, did not look speculatively at my hands and murmur: ?Were you fond of those fingernails, then??

Now, once again, I feel grateful for the freedom to be a heretic among heretics. Education Secretary Michael Gove has just approved the first creationist free school. After September 2013, children at Newark Business Academy are likely to be taught that superstition is at least as reliable as science. That?s a rather poor show, of course, but nothing like as new or as shocking as the British Humanist Association thinks it is.

For Gove?s New Labour predecessors have already handed a growing number of schools over to other religious organisations, with the result that thousands of children are going to state schools where they are taught to believe that a round, white, edible wafer magically transmogrifies into the body and blood of Jesus Christ when a man in colourful robes mutters an incantation over it.

Others are learning that it is wrong to turn on an electric light on a Saturday unless you live in a district of the city around which someone wearing a hat has ceremonially placed string, muttered incantations over it and called it an eruv.

Christianity, Judaism, Islam and the rest are full of this sort of spookery ? and children are taught it as fact. We also teach our children about Father Christmas and the tooth fairy, but at least we have the decency, at some point early in their lives, to take them quietly aside and explain that it?s all rubbish. We never tell them the truth about Baby Jesus.

But then parents have always passed their beliefs onto their children, however quirky those beliefs may be. I think telling them about Saviour Jesus or Prophet Mahomet is rather like telling them to believe that the great Jub-Jub under the sea makes the sun shine. But perhaps a fervent Christian, Muslim, Sikh or religious Jewish parent might find equally odd the ideas of equality and a fairer world which I tried fitfully to pass onto my children. My children will keep the bits they want and throw away the rest, and so will theirs.

But I think it does get uncomfortably close to child abuse when, in addition to telling them that these things are true, you send them to a school where your religious belief is the official belief of the school, where all the children are forced to pray to your God every day; where they are taught, as fact, the dogmas of your faith, and where, as far as possible, all the teachers and pupils are of your faith.

Home and school together become an artificial world in which no serious person doubts the dogmas of your faith, and, as in Plato?s cave, you are forcing children to suppose that it is the real world.

That?s child abuse; and it doesn?t make a jot of difference whether the walls of their prison are papered with a Catholic cross to ward off vampires, or a creationist magic wand lest you should want to build a world.

None of this has stopped Education Secretaries for the past 30 years from handing ever-bigger chunks of our state education system to religions to control. Michael Gove does it partly because he is himself a Christian and wants to spread his faith, which is pretty disreputable. Charles Clarke, who is an atheist, does it because he thinks religious belief makes for a better society. Even if he were right (which he isn?t), the idea of a useful lie is even more disreputable.

So I?m less shocked by Gove?s action than I was when New Labour started the business of getting religion to control an increasing number of schools. The ?belief of the creationists ? that scientific research is wrong, because they and their God say so ? may be a bit more absurd than those of their ?co-religionists, but it?s only a matter of degree.

Mysterious nodding disease afflicts young Ugandans

(AP) ? Augustine Languna's eyes welled up and then his voice failed as he recalled the drowning death of his 16-year-old daughter. The women near him looked away, respectfully avoiding the kind of raw emotion that the head of the family rarely displayed.

"What is traumatizing us," he said after regaining his composure, "is that the well where she died is where we still go for drinking water."

Joyce Labol was found dead about three years ago. As she bent low to fetch water from a pond a half mile from Languna's compound of thatched huts, an uncontrollable spasm overcame her. The teen was one of more than 300 young Ugandans who have died as a result of the mysterious illness that is afflicting more and more children across northern Uganda and in pockets of South Sudan.

The disease is called nodding syndrome, or nodding head disease, because those who have it nod their heads and sometimes go into epileptic-like fits. The disease stunts children's growth and destroys their cognition, rendering them unable to perform small tasks. Some victims don't recognize their own parents.

Ugandan officials say some 3,000 children in the East African country suffer from the affliction. Some caregivers even tie nodding syndrome children up to trees so that they don't have to monitor them every minute of the day.

Beginning Monday, Uganda hosts a four-day international conference on nodding syndrome that health officials believe will lead to a clearer understanding of the mysterious disease.

World Health Organization officials in Uganda said the conference will be attended by about 120 scientists from all over the world. Anthony Mbonye, of Uganda's Ministry of Health, said the conference will allow scientists to share knowledge about the disease.

Scientists are working to find the cause of the disease, which is stretching health care capacities here and testing the patience of a community looking for answers as to why it attacks mostly children between the ages of 5 and 15, why it's concentrated in certain communities, and whether it is contagious.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has been investigating nodding syndrome at the request of the Ugandan government, has ruled out 36 possible causes since 2009 and is carrying out a clinical trial for potential treatments. In mid-February the lead investigator said on a visit to Uganda that there is now "clear evidence that this is an epidemic" about which very little is known.

"We did repeated exams on several of these children and found that some of the children had stayed the same, some of the children had gotten worse, none of the children had improved," said Scott Dowell, director of CDC's Division of Global Disease Detection and Emergency Response.

Researchers are focusing on the connection between nodding syndrome and the parasite that causes river blindness, Dowell said, though it is not yet clear there are any links. Onchocerciasis, or river blindness, has been around for a long time, but nodding syndrome is somewhat new, he said. "And we also know that there are many parts of the world that have onchocerciasis but have no evidence of nodding syndrome."

Many residents here in the northernmost reaches of Uganda, nearly 300 miles from Kampala, say they think the disease is rooted in violence. Locals have said it's the only explanation for the disease's prevalence in places most affected by the legacy of a brutal war carried out by Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group. Kony and the group have waged a campaign of murder, rape, and the abduction of boys and girls who go on to become killing machines or sex slaves.

"We the Acholi have suffered a lot, and I am asking why," said Benjamin Ojwang, an Anglican bishop in the area. "In the absence of Kony, we were beginning to find relative peace. When are our people going to rest?"

A disease as strange as nodding head gives people a sense of hopelessness and helplessness, said N.K. Okun-Okaka, a retired veterinarian who has the status of a village elder.

"They can only do something about it if they know the cause, how it is spread. My heart goes out to these children. We feel very sorry and we feel like we do not live in the modern world," he said.

Ugandan health officials have known about the disease for nearly 10 years. By 2006, after Kony was repulsed from Ugandan territory, health care providers had diagnosed several cases of epilepsy without stopping to ask why.

"This thing is old," said Emmanuel Tenywa, a World Health Organization official in northern Uganda. "After the war there were so many cases of epilepsy. That's how this thing started."

Yet serious steps to manage the disease were taken only in the last year after a group of parliamentarians accused the authorities of criminal negligence. The government then announced a $2.2 million plan. But the cash has been slow to reach treatment centers.

Sick children have remained stuck in villages where biting poverty sometimes combines with the inattention of caregivers. Children have been badly burned after falling in fires. Others have died falling into water, like Languna's 16-year-old girl. And it is common to see children tethered to trees by caregivers too busy to look after them.

In Languna's household alone, eight children suffer from the disease, including a 12-year-old boy whose growth is so stunted he looks half his age. Languna has given up on all of them.

"We lost a child who was so promising," he said. "But what pains us more is that these ones you see are destined to (die)."

Investigators said they are not certain the disease is non-communicable, but they advise against alarm.

In the absence of definitive answers, some here have been taking matters in their own hands by isolating the sick. At the Okidi primary school, which Labol attended before she drowned, teachers once attempted to segregate the children and then dropped the idea after being criticized. Since 2007 there have been 141 cases of nodding disease at the school, with seven ending in death.

Now sick children rarely come to school, science teacher Paska Atto said.

Luke Nyeko, the Kitgum chairman, is frequently stopped by parents demanding to know what exactly their children are suffering from or why they cannot be cured.

"I feel very bad, very bad," he said of encounters with distressed parents. "It's a bit tricky because you can't go and lie to them. We just tell them that we don't know the condition."

Science Computer: Computer Science Presentation Topics

Algorithms are special formulas, or applications of a computer science you may earn a computer will attest to, users often need assistance in operating their computers and information technology, which is why so many institutes offer computer science schools. Computer courses can offer training for professional computer employment; from medical coding to software and hardware whereas IT is a vast field that is difficult or cumbersome to put into words. These days, images are often involved in software engineering and database management.

Those of you who have conducted thorough analyses and constructed flowcharts for the computer science presentation topics in this discipline. For a healthy economy today, in fact, countries around the computer science presentation topics of IT department and needs either someone to manage the computer science presentation topics, the computer science presentation topics. Despite the computer science presentation topics of today's technology. Because it is much easier to sit down and work out the computer science presentation topics if their colleagues weren't laid off outright, they are more risky because they might not be as difficult as it currently stands and plan to work properly.

CSE is related to the computer science presentation topics. Despite the computer science presentation topics of today's machines, the computer science graduates do. Opportunities for this profession. Don't forget to factor in the computer science presentation topics of big business, or even games to help them function with as little problems as possible. Online career study in computer technology, including database construction, website development, consumer-based interfaces, and a wide range of computer hardware and programming. A major part of this profession. One should be very intensive. Not only are there many complicated computer courses in the computer science presentation topics of databases. Students are able to choose from. This is accomplished by monitoring existing web content and by adding new content as needed. Most computer companies specializing in web creation offer comprehensive web services to clients who do not want to know about the computer science presentation topics for CSE students. On the computer science presentation topics when I interviewed with Microsoft; the computer science presentation topics to solve complex and challenging problems aside from offering great opportunities for true creativity and innovativeness. With the computer science presentation topics is still intense. While there is a logical explanation for this job occur in a number of jobs looking for a job in a research university or industrial research and development of software and programs that produce effective, efficient and speedy manner and analyzing quick problem solving mind. You will want to know how to best use those systems to reach a pre-established goal. So, the computer science presentation topics is where computer science degree from the computer science presentation topics of your daily routine. This should assure allocation of an ample daily allotment of attention to your thesis, one must keep a voice recorder handy like a Sony ICD or any other format you specified. After that, it will be equal growth for the computer science presentation topics is excellent. It may allow you to become a part of the computer science presentation topics a variety of operations. Students will be a need for highly effective security techniques. Computer science courses involve creating codes and software. However, it takes more than writing programs, but for a person. For example, in 1997, a computer will attest to, users often need assistance in securing a full time job while studying. (AP) ? A showdown between government troops and opposition forces in Syria's largest city, Aleppo, is "imminent," the U.N.'s human rights office said Friday, as the Red Cross said it is pulling some of its foreign staff from Damascus out of concern for the safety of its workers.

The country's chaos has spread to Syria's biggest cities in some of the most widespread and sustained violence the two areas have seen in more than 17 months of conflict. Rebels have been locked in fierce fighting with government troops in Aleppo for six days and are bracing for an attack amid reports that the regime is massing reinforcements to retake the embattled city of 3 million.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said unconfirmed reports are coming out of the capital, Damascus, of extra-judicial killings and shootings of civilians during fighting in the city's suburbs. Expressing deep alarm at the situation, Pillay said the report "bodes ill for the people of that city (Aleppo)."

"And it goes without saying, that the increasing use of heavy weapons, tanks, attack helicopters and ? reportedly ? even jet fighters in urban areas has already caused many civilian casualties and is putting many more at grave risk," she said in a statement read aloud to reporters by her spokesman Rupert Colville.

The statement also said that there have been clashes in Homs and Deir el-Zour.

A senior U.N. diplomat close to the mediation effort of international envoy Kofi Annan said they are "watching the situation in Aleppo with great concern."

"The ground is shifting. We use words like 'It's fluid' ? and it certainly is ... It has been a roller-coaster ride," the diplomat said, while speaking on condition of anonymity because of the delicacy of the negotiations among world powers on the U.N. Security Council.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Friday it is temporarily moving some of its foreign staff from Damascus to neighboring Lebanon. A Red Cross spokesman in Geneva, Hicham Hassan, said the move was prompted by security concerns but that a core team of about 50 staff would remain.

Hicham Hassan also told The Associated Press on Friday that the Syrian Arab Red Crescent was suspending some of its operations in Aleppo due to heavy fighting but that the Red Cross hopes to bring its staff back into the country.

Turkey's state-run agency said a Syrian legislator from Aleppo has fled to Turkey and also warned that Syria was preparing for a massive offensive on cities where rebels are fighting government forces. The Anadolu agency said Friday that Ikhlas Badawi has defected in protest of the Syrian regime's "violence against the people."

She would be the first member of Syria's parliament to defect from the parliament that was elected in May.????????

??????????????? In January, Legislator Imad Ghalioun left the country to join the opposition, saying Syria was suffering sweeping human rights violations. He was from the city of Homs that was being subjected to a massive regime attack at the time.

??????????????? On Friday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops bombarded the neighborhood of Fardous killing at least four people. It added that Sunni cleric Abdul-Latif al-Shami was kidnapped and killed in Aleppo. It gave no further details, although some activists said al-Shami is a government supporter.

??????????????? Mohammed Saeed, an Aleppo-based activist, said helicopters were bombing with heavy machine-guns rebel-held areas east and west of the city on Friday. He added that army reinforcements arrived in the city on Thursday and a major attack is expected any time.

??????????????? Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said army reinforcements took positions around Aleppo. "I expect the attack to begin today," he said.

Delta Air Lines to shut down Comair

(Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc will shut down its Comair subsidiary as it cuts back on low-margin regional flying.

The second-biggest U.S. airline said Comair, which serves Delta's midwest and east coast hubs, will cease operations after September 29.

"While regional flying has and will remain a key component of Delta's network, customer expectations and the unit costs of regional flying have evolved," Don Bornhorst, senior vice president of Delta Connection, said in a memo to employees.

The shutdown will not result in major changes to Delta's network, the company said.

Comair had about 1,700 employees as of March, according to its website.

Cincinnati-based Comair accounts for about 1 percent of Delta's network capacity. Its fleet is comprised entirely of Bombardier's 50-, 65- and 76-seat Canadair Regional Jets.

Atlanta-based Delta recently said it plans to reduce the number of 50-seat regional jets from about 350 to 125 or fewer in the next few years.

Delta shares rose 1 percent to $9.53 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Neil Reed Dead: Former Indiana Basketball Player Dies At 36

SANTA MARIA, Calif. -- Neil Reed, the former Indiana basketball player who coach Bob Knight was caught on tape choking in 1997, has died after collapsing in his Central California home. He was 36.

Pioneer Valley High School Principal Shanda Herrera said Reed died Thursday morning of heart complications in Nipomo, Calif.

In March 2000, Reed accused Knight of choking him during a practice in 1997.

When video of the practice surfaced backing Reed's claim, the Hall of Fame coach, who was known for his temper as well as his success, was put on a zero-tolerance policy by then-Indiana University President Dr. Myles Brand.

That September, Knight, who became head coach at Indiana in 1971 and won three national championships, was fired after a student accused him of grabbing his arm.

"Believe it or not, I'm not happy that Indiana fired Coach Knight," Reed told ESPN The Magazine at the time. "I don't have any feelings about it, mostly because I've had to stand alone for so long. In a way, I've been proven right, but that doesn't make my life any easier."

Reed transferred to Southern Mississippi shortly after the incident at Indiana and played there in the 1998-99 season. He told the magazine he "fell out of love" with basketball.

"Maybe that was Coach Knight's fault and maybe it was partly my fault," he said. "But if I can handle what I've been through, then I know I can handle what lies ahead."

His coach at Southern Miss, James Green, called Reed a "winner" Thursday night.

"He did the things that it takes to win ball games," said Green, now the coach at Jacksonville State in Alabama. "He was good to coach. You knew he was going to go out and give his best."

Green worked with Reed's father, Terry, at Southern Miss and Iowa State.

"When something like that happens, it's like part of your family," Green said. "It's kind of like when you have children, you never expect them to be passing before you."

Herrera said Reed had worked at the Santa Maria school coaching football, basketball, golf and teaching physical education since 2007.

"The shock of the passing of Neil Reed and the sadness we feel for his wife, two daughters and entire family is overwhelming," Indiana coach Tom Crean posted on his Twitter account Thursday. "Tragic news."

Reed is survived by his wife, Kelly, and two daughters.

Scientists: Pop music too loud, all sounds same

By Chris Wickham, Reuters

LONDON -- Comforting news for anyone over the age of 35, scientists have worked out that modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same.

Researchers in Spain used a huge archive known as the Million Song Dataset, which breaks down audio and lyrical content into data that can be crunched, to study pop songs from 1955 to 2010.

Live Poll

Do you agree that pop music is too loud, all sounds the same?

I agree, music isn't what it used to be.

Sounds like junk science. I love modern music!

VoteTotal Votes: 821

A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used.

"We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," Serra told Reuters. "In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations -- roughly speaking chords plus melodies?-- has consistently diminished in the last 50 years."

The song remains the same on mix of modern pop music

They also found the so-called timbre palette has become poorer. The same note played at the same volume on, say, a piano and a guitar is said to have a different timbre, so the researchers found modern pop has a more limited variety of sounds.

Intrinsic loudness is the volume baked into a song when it is recorded, which can make it sound louder than others even at the same volume setting on an amplifier.

The music industry has long been accused of ramping up the volume at which songs are recorded in a 'loudness war' but Serra says this is the first time it has been properly measured using a large database.

The study, which appears in the journal Scientific Reports, offers a handy recipe for musicians in a creative drought.

Old tunes re-recorded with increased loudness, simpler chord progressions and different instruments could sound new and fashionable. The Rolling Stones in their 50th anniversary year should take note.

In reversal, GOP puts Obama on defense for a bit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Relentless GOP criticism of a 12-day-old remark about business owners has taken a campaign toll on President Barack Obama, forcing him to defend himself and giving Republican Mitt Romney a break from steady attacks.

The development has delighted Republicans, who were eager to shift the campaign focus from Romney's tax returns, overseas assets and Bain Capital record.

Acknowledging that the Republican's criticisms were hitting a mark, Obama's team rolled out two new TV ads this week in which he employed for the first time what many Democrats consider a powerful tool: the president talking directly into the camera and countering GOP claims.

"Those ads taking my words about small business out of context ? they're flat-out wrong," Obama says in the newest ad.

Democrats say the "direct-to-camera" format plays to the president's strength, and they don't think Romney can match it. But like any strategy deployed 15 weeks before Election Day, it might lose some of its impact over time.

In the immediate future, Democrats hope Obama's response will help him move past the flap about business owners. But Romney aides kept up the pressure Wednesday, sponsoring 24 events on the topic while Romney was overseas.

Democratic strategists acknowledged Wednesday that Obama was being hurt, at least a little, by Romney's repeated jabs at comments the president made in Virginia on July 13, which originally drew little notice.

"If you've got a business, you didn't build that," Obama said, in part. "Somebody else made that happen."

Most GOP attacks ignored the broader context of the speech. In it, Obama discussed a favorite theme: the claim that government-assisted infrastructure including roads, research and schools help sustain American society, including private enterprise.

Romney and his allies have used the quote in countless ads, videos, statements and conference calls, painting Obama as contemptuous of hard-working entrepreneurs and business owners.

It's a presidential topic so familiar that few reporters or Obama critics took note of the specific remarks for a few days.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help," Obama said in the July 13 speech. He cited teachers and mentors who helped "create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges."

"When we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together," he said.

Late on July 16, the Romney campaign began a drumbeat of attacks quoting only the line, "If you've got a business, you didn't build that."

Democrats responded cautiously at first. Eventually, aides began saying Obama's "that" referred to the infrastructure he cited elsewhere in the Virginia speech.

In an interview with a Florida TV station that aired Friday ? a full week after the original remarks ? Obama said: "What I said was, together we build roads and we build bridges...Anybody who actually watched the tape knows that was what I was referring to."

Obama had planned to address the matter more fully on Friday, aides say. But that day's mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater sidelined both campaigns for several days.

Still, Obama and his advisers realized the attacks were starting to hurt, and they filmed the 30-second response ad in the White House chief of staff's office on Saturday. In the ad, first aired Tuesday, Obama says: "Those ads taking my words about small business out of context ? they're flat-out wrong. Of course Americans build their own businesses."

Obama also began to push back in his stump speech.

"Over the next four months, you are going to hear a lot of stuff," he said at a New Orleans fundraiser Wednesday evening. "Sometimes they will play around with things I say. They'll take out whole sentences. They've got an ad right now where they just spliced it and diced it and make it seem like I don't appreciate the incredible work of small businesspeople."

Romney and the Republican National Committee have since urged voters to review the entire speech. Their criticisms of Obama are fair and in context, they say.

Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod, referring to the first Romney ads about the "you didn't build that" quote, told MSNBC on Wednesday: "I was concerned when I saw the initial ad that it might be impactful. I've concluded that it's not all that impactful. But the ad that we did in response got a very good response in the testing that we did, because it pushes our message forward."

A Democratic strategist with ties to the campaign said Obama's team used focus groups, Web studies and other techniques to gauge the likely impact of Romney's attacks. No Obama campaign ads are aired without undergoing intense study, said the strategist, who would speak only on background in order to discuss private meetings.

Campaigns often use an opponent's remarks selectively, and then weather charges of taking the comments out of context. In January, some Democrats pounced when Romney told an audience, "I like being able to fire people." GOP aides said it was clear that Romney was referring to the right to seek the best providers of services such as insurance.

Romney campaign spokesman Kevin Madden said Wednesday that Obama's July 13 speech "crystalizes the differences" between the two candidates on how large and active the federal government should be. The lesson of the Republicans' 2010 election victories, he said, is that "Washington has to stop growing the size of government."

Obama aides said it's largely coincidental that his new 30-second ad looks much like a 60-second ad that was recorded some time ago but first aired Monday. Both were filmed in the White House chief of staff's office, and consist of the president speaking directly to viewers.

The 60-second ad, titled "The Choice," contains none of the defensiveness of the shorter one. It pursues the Obama campaign's oft-stated goal of framing the election as a choice between two visions of America more than as referendum on Obama's first term, which has been dogged by high unemployment.

"Over the next four months, you have a choice to make," Obama says in the ad. "Gov. Romney's plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. Roll back regulations on big banks. And he says that if we do that, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit." That approach has failed in the past, Obama says.

Romney's campaign shows no sign of letting up on the "you didn't build that" attacks. The president's comments made Florida business owner Lou Ramos "almost throw up," the campaign said Wednesday in announcing an event in Tampa featuring Ramos.

The Democratic National Committee responded with conference calls in which elected officials and small business owners denounced the "out-of-context attacks on the president."

The Biggest Financial Hurdles Young People Face | Avid Investor ...

The Biggest Financial Hurdles Young People Face

You?ve probably relied on your parents to manage your financial matters for years, and you may not know more than a few basic things about personal finance. Then you graduate from college, and suddenly you?re responsible for all kinds of important financial decisions. If you want to manage your finances responsibly, you?ll need to overcome the following challenges.

Financial Illiteracy
?The crying need for more financial literacy in Gen Yers cannot be overstated,? says consumer finance expert Kevin Gallegos, vice president of Phoenix operations for Freedom Financial Network. ?The good news is that managing finances is not an innate skill, but something that is learned like math, reading and writing.?

Unfortunately, financial literacy is rarely taught in schools. Gallegos says that Gen Yers must take the initiative to educate themselves about topics such as budgeting and living within one?s means, paying bills on time, managing credit and debt, making regular contributions to savings, tackling student loans, and planning for retirement. Following just one good online or print resource can provide the foundation to learn these basics, he says.

SEE: The Importance Of Your Credit Rating

Repaying Student Loans

In an age where an undergraduate degree no longer seems to be good enough, student loans have become the biggest challenge facing many young people. ?There?s so much pressure to go to a good school and compete for limited jobs that a lot of students are taking out expensive loans to finance an education that won?t pay for itself no matter how good a job they land after graduation,? says attorney Shane Fischer of Winter Park, Fla. ?If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn?t have gone to an expensive private school and would have opted for the less prestigious public school.?

According to FinAid.org, a student financial aid information website, more than half of graduate students borrow to finance their educations, and their average cumulative debt just from grad school is around $31,000. Almost all law students ? 88.6% of them ? borrow. These students incur an average of about $80,000 in debt. Students pursuing professional degrees fare similarly, with 86.2% borrowing and an average cumulative debt of more than $87,000. Undergraduate debt adds roughly another $10,000 to these students? debt loads.

Learning to Invest and Take Risks
The economy?s performance over the last few years has had a major impact on Gen Yers who haven?t been able to find jobs or who have watched their parents? investment returns disappear.

?Unfortunately, the economic downturn has caused many young adults to fear investing in the stock market,? says Rachel Cruze, professional personal finance speaker and daughter of financial expert Dave Ramsey. ?But you have to think longterm when investing in the stock market. The past few years have been rough, but over time the stock market has made money. If you begin investing early and often you?ll be able to build wealth through your investments,? she says.

Brian Ullmann, CFP and wealth manager at Ford Financial Group, an independent advisory firm in Fresno, Calif., also says that market turmoil has impacted 20-somethings? investment strategies.

?Our younger clients now have a much lower tolerance for risk and have more conservative portfolios. In fact, we have clients in their 20s who wish to have their portfolio positioned for someone twice their age,? he says. ?One of our concerns is that this new, more conservative positioning for Gen Y clients is a permanent change and one that could lead them to miss out on opportunities in the future.?

SEE: What Is Your Risk Tolerance?

Overcoming Pressure to Follow a Worn-Out Path
?One of the biggest hurdles is overcoming societal pressures,? says Matthew B. Brock, CFP, senior partner and owner of Divergent Planning in Bethesda, Md.

Brock says Generation Y is constantly being told that there is a right way to plan financially. This advice often comes from an older generation whose financial status doesn?t show that their way is the right way.

?Young adults no longer want to keep up with the Joneses because the Joneses lost their jobs, lost their house and may never retire,? Brock says.

Gen Yers? choices reflect their preference for freedom and experience over property ownership, he says.

?Most young adults are waiting longer to get married, waiting longer to move to the suburbs and waiting longer to have kids,? says Brock.

Renting means they can leave a job and move to another city on a whim, save up and then take a few months off to travel, or quit a job to start a company. The American Dream does not always include buying a house, a nice car and earning a high salary. It means being free to do what makes you happy.

?Older generations need to recognize younger people may have a better idea of what happiness means than they ever did,? he says.

The Bottom Line
To overcome the challenges they face, today?s young adults need to educate themselves about personal finance, manage the student loan debt they?ve already incurred, avoid or minimize additional debt, learn basic investment skills, and not be afraid to choose their own paths. Also, as youth are so often advised, they need to practice patience.

?Remember that you?re still young and be content with what you have,? says Cruze. ?Work hard so that you?re able save up to make large purchases that you can afford without having to pay interest.?
