2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Test Drive

On-Sale Date: Now

Price: $24,450 to $34,800

Competitors: Ford Edge, Toyota RAV4, Kia Sorento

Powertrains: 2.4-liter I-4, 190 hp, 181 lb-ft; 2.0-liter turbo I-4, 264 hp, 269 lb-ft; FWD or AWD

EPA Fuel Economy (city/hwy): 20?22/27?33

What?s New: Hyundai?s all-new Santa Fe is now available in a short-wheelbase, five-passenger (Sport) version, and coming soon in a long-wheelbase seven-passenger iteration.

The Sport claims 266 pounds of weight loss over the previous version, thanks to extensive use of high-tensile steel. The long-wheelbase version, when it appears in 2013, will be 397 pounds lighter than the Veracruz it replaces.

With a 17-hp bump and a 3-mpg improvement, the 2.0-liter turbo is the performance engine of choice. Alternatively, the thriftier 2.4-liter mill claims the highest highway fuel economy of any automatic-equipped crossover, at 33 mpg highway. Reworked MacPherson front and multilink rear suspension also gives smoother ride quality and better handling.

Tech Tidbit: Hyundai?s in-house-developed six-speed gearbox boasts a no-maintenance oil that never needs to be changed, and efficiency improvements that help boost its expected lifespan from 250,000 to 300,000 miles.

Driving Character: The fully loaded Santa Fe Sports we tested in the mountainous expanses surrounding Park City, Utah, proved to be surprisingly pleasant steeds during a day?s worth of driving. The 2.0-liter turbos in our test cars offered mild but meaty acceleration, which was particularly notable since we were driving at elevations approaching 9,000 feet. They?ll never be confused with hot rods. But the Santa Fe?s passing power is sufficiently robust to encourage ticket-worthy velocities on open stretches of interstate.

Control in the corners isn?t quite as precise as it could be, but refinements to the suspension (which include moving the multilink rear setup within the wheel for more efficient packaging) reflect Hyundai?s incremental efforts to enhance feedback. The electric steering system is still a work in progress, but at least the Santa Fe offers three settings for effort, the middle providing the best balance between ease of use and resistance.

Favorite Detail: The Santa Fe?s quiet cabin proved minimally fatiguing at the end of a long day of driving. Credit its new double-layered windshield, enhanced carpet floor insulation, and dynamic subframe dampers for the muted on-road persona.

Driver?s Grievance: The Santa Fe delivers luxury, efficiency, and a reasonable amount of performance, but its missing link is still the sort of steering feel that begs you to take the twisty way home.

Bottom Line: Hyundai is the first to admit that it?s gotten to be good at attracting buyers in the pre- and post-family stages but not quite so savvy at drawing those smack in the middle. Thanks to its clean looks, updated interior, and inviting cabin, the 2013 Santa Fe Sport goes a long way toward offering the sort of accommodating ride that should appeal to kid-equipped parents. When the seven-passenger iteration appears, bigger families will likely flock, too.

Whereas the Mazda CX-5 is aimed at driving enthusiasts and the RAV4 is beloved by Toyotaphiles, Hyundai?s reworked Santa Fe offers an overall package that?s comfortable, functional, and well-put-together.

Julia Child foundation, oven-maker in legal battle

BOSTON (AP) ? A foundation set up by Julia Child is locked in a legal battle with the manufacturer of Thermador ovens for touting the late chef's use of the company's high-end appliances.

The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts claims BSH Home Appliances Corp. is using Child's name and image without permission. The Irvine, Calif.-based manufacturer says it is simply making a factual reference to Child's use of its appliances.

BSH filed a lawsuit in Boston against the foundation last week, asking a federal judge to determine the rights of both sides. The foundation countered by filing two lawsuits this week against BHS, one in state court in Santa Barbara, Calif., where the foundation is based, and the other in federal court in Los Angeles. The lawsuits ask for an injunction to stop BHS from using Child's name and seek unspecified monetary damages.

Child, who died in 2004, had a Thermador oven in her Cambridge kitchen, which is now displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington. She also used Thermador products on the set of her popular television show, "The French Chef."

In its complaint, BSH said the foundation sent the company a letter last month in which it said it has exclusive ownership and control of Child's name, image, likeness and celebrity identity, as well as trademarks and copyrights related to her. BSH said the foundation alleged that BSH's use of Child's name and image constitutes copyright infringement, trademark infringement and "a post-mortem violation of Julia Child's right of publicity."

The foundation demanded that BSH stop using the name, image and "all other indicia of Julia Child's personality," according to the complaint filed by BSH.

BSH acknowledges that it has used images of Child and references to her use of Thermador products on its website and on social media sites, but its attorneys wrote in the complaint that "those uses do not state or imply any endorsement by Ms. Child."

The company said its references to Child "reflect on the long history, significance and influence of Thermador products on American society and culture, and Ms. Child's documented and well-known use of those products."

In its lawsuits, the foundation said Child, who rose to prominence in the 1960s through her books and TV appearances, had many endorsement opportunities during her lengthy career but chose to forego them.

"Instead, she focused her career on public education, and allowed her show to be broadcast on PBS, a nonprofit television network, for its entire 10-year run," the state lawsuit said.

The foundation said BHS has featured Child's name and photo prominently in advertising, marketing and promotional materials, including on the homepage of the Thermador website, creating the appearance the Child had been its spokeswoman during her career.

NASA Discovers Galactic Hot Dogs; Starved Monkeys Don't Live Longer

Discovered: Antarctic ice methane could hasten global warming; tuning an instrument also tunes the brain; NASA survey finds millions of potential black holes; low-cal diets don't improve lifespan.

RELATED: Another Moon for Pluto; Cows Freak Out About Global Warming

There's a hot dog in the Milky Way's future. NASA held a press conference today to announce new findings about supermassive black holes and other "extreme objects" found via the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), which scanned the entire sky on infrared wavelengths twice. The most sensitive measurement of the sky yet, WISE discovered millions of black holes candidates as well as 1,000 extremely bright galaxies undergoing drastic transformations. These galaxies are called Hot DOGs (or Hot, Dust-Obscured Galaxies), and they're formed when two spiral galaxies collide, creating a whirlwind of dust and stars that emits 100 trillion times the light of our sun. They theorize that these Hot DOGs are the result of black holes at the center of galaxies, which accrete surrounding matter at accelerating rates, eventually drawing nearby galaxies into a collision course with one another. The Milky Way and our nearest neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy, may end up forming a Hot DOG in the distant future. [NASA/JPL]

Methane trapped in Antarctic ice could speed global warming. With Antarctic ice melting at an alarming rate, scientists are worried about a chemical trapped inside the Antarctic Ice Sheet. An international team of researchers have worked to simulate the result of methane gas escaping from Antarctic ice. The methane deposits stored in Antarctic ice likely built up over millions of years, and if it leaked into the ozone layer due to the thaw brought on by climate change, it will only hasten global warming's effects. "The Antarctic Ice Sheet could constitute a previously neglected component of the global methane hydrate inventory although significant uncertainty exists," the researchers report in a paper published in?Nature.?[Reuters]

Low calorie diets may not lengthen life.?There are some nutritionists out there who think that the secret to prolonging life is consuming as few calories as possible. But a major long-term study on calorie restriction shows that such diets may not lead to longer lifespans. Monkeys put on a severely restrictive low-calorie diet over the course of a 23-year study didn't live longer to their more gluttonous peers, researchers at the National Institute on Aging have found. The skinny primates did perform well on certain health measures and had better metabolisms, but they didn't survive any longer than control group monkeys. "These monkeys were healthier than really healthy control counterparts," says NIA scientist Julie Mattison. "So it?s quite possible that we?ve maximized our lifespan effect."?However, restricted calorie diets have been shown to lengthen life in rats, flies and worms in previous studies. ?[Bloomberg]

Music fine-tunes the brain. Piano tuners don't seem to have enviable jobs. They have to listen to off-key pianos all day, and travel around to peoples' homes to tinker around inside old, complicated instruments. But new research shows that their work might actually be quite stimulating, at least neurologically. Scientists from the University College London and Newcastle University find that listening to two notes played at the same moment causes the brain to adapt, leading to beneficial structural changes in the hippocampus. This is the part of the brain that controls functions like memory and navigation, and the piano tuners they studied had significantly different hippocampus structures than non-musical peers. Researcher Sundeep Teki says, "We already know that musical training can correlate with structural changes, but our group of professionals offered a rare opportunity to examine the ability of the brain to adapt over time to a very specialised form of listening." ?[BBC]

The ongoing thaw has opened new sea lanes to shipping, with a Chinese icebreaker recently becoming the first ship to cross the Arctic Ocean from China to Iceland. Matt Stock reports.

However, the ice is unlikely to stop shrinking.?Arctic sea melts?through the summer usually reaching its annual minimum in September.

On Sunday (Aug. 26), Arctic sea-ice extent fell to 1.58 million square miles (4.10 million square kilometers), surpassing the previous low, set on Sept. 18, 2007, the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reports. Sea-ice extent refers to the area of ocean covered at least 15 percent by sea ice, according to the NSIDC.

The record low, set in 2007, stood at 1.61 square miles (4.17 square kilometers).

But this year's melt is unlikely to stop soon. The melt season still has another two or three weeks to go. [10 Things to Know about Sea Ice]

Continuous satellite records of sea-ice extent began in 1979. But in recent years, satellite data have shown a shift in the fluctuating ice cover. For example, including this year, the six lowest ice extents in the satellite record have occurred in the last six years, the NSIDC reports.

Scientists attribute the shift to a combination of natural forces, for example, a storm in early August coincided with an acceleration of melt that occurred at the same time. However, over time, the effects of winds, clouds and other natural conditions should, in theory, balance themselves out. It is the emission of greenhouse gases that alters the long-term trend by warming the planet, Walt Meier, a research scientist at NSIDC?told LiveScience last year.?

This year's melt rate was much faster than the normal rate for this time of year, the NSIDC reported today (Aug. 27).

Sea ice matters to the animals, such as polar bears?and walruses, that depend on it for habitat, and scientists worry the loss of ice could have serious consequences for them.

Sea ice also affects weather and global climate, because it reflects most of the sun's energy back out to space. If sea ice melts, the dark water beneath it absorbs most of the energy, which in turn enters the natural system. In this way, scientists believe the melting of sea ice will aggravate global warming.

First up is a trio of speakers that push tunes from your smartphone, including a $180 WiFi-connected Smart Radio, a $250 Boombox and a $100 Mobile Boombox, the latter of which seems like it could take on Jawbone's Jambox and win on price alone.

If you prefer strapping your tunes to your skull, the company's got a lovely looking pair of $400 in-ear monitor-style earphones that are said to be the closest you'll get to a professional set. Cans-wise, the range is topped by a $350 pair of Bluetooth-headphones that are built for the rigors of being tossed in your bag when you reach the office. If you're worried about nursing your battery after a long day, the company thoughtfully bundled a cable in the set. If your wallet won't stretch to those prices, lower-spec wired versions are available for $200 and $100, respectively.

For those of us who've found our sets die at the cable connections, the company's smartly built all of theirs to be braided, detachable and each one has an in-line hands-free kit as standard. The range goes live in Europe in September, so we've got pictures, video and PR galore to whet your appetite in the meantime.

Tomas Sedlacek, Czech general, dies at 94

PRAGUE (AP) ? A Czech general who fought with the Allies in France, Britain and the Soviet Union during World War II and who later resisted the communist regimes in his own country has died.

Gen. Tomas Sedlacek, aged 94, died Monday at Prague's Motol hospital, the Defense Ministry said.

President Vaclav Klaus praised him as "a true soldier."

Sedlacek, who graduated from a military academy, fled to France in 1940 when his nation was occupied by Nazi troops. After France was defeated, he joined the British army before moving to the Soviet Union in 1944 and helping liberate Czechoslovakia.

After the Communists took power there, he was arrested in 1951, convicted of anti-communist activities and jailed for life. He was released in 1960 and exonerated by the Czech Velvet Revolution in 1989.

health Fun and Success ? Secondary Auto Financing Available As ...

As the economy begins to recover, auto finance companies that cater to helping people that have bad credit are providing loans for those that are in need.

Click here to view related Website: Buying a Car with Bad Credit

BigNews.Biz ? Apr 06,2010 ? It has become unreal at the number of individuals within the United States that have fallen upon hard times due to the economic recession that our nation has fallen under. Today, so many individuals are suffering from bad credit, which can are contributed to the economic struggles of our country.

In fact, recent studies have shown that repossessions on automobiles have reached an all time high and are still steadily rising as are the foreclosure rates. It just seems as if individuals continue to have a much harder time in this economic time being able to make ends meet for themselves as well as for their family. If an individual is interested in buying a car with bad credit, where could they turn?

Fortunately, the economy is recovering and help is available through select secondary finance companies.

There is a marvelous solution that not too many are aware of where individuals can get their financing based upon their income instead of their credit rating.

These loan companies offer instant approval for car financing every day by basing their approval decisions upon what the individual brings home each month. This does not mean that the interest rate will be out the roof, but instead you will be given an interest rate that is reasonable and much better than it would be if they where to go some where else. The terms of their loan will be affordable as well as their monthly payment since they will be based on their monthly income. These are specialized loan companies who deal with individuals in this type of situation every single day.

When an individual deals directly with the loan company they are allowed to secure financing without having to worry with any additional fees or having to go through a middleman, who will tend to inflate their interest rate for them. In this way, the individual has a much better opportunity to save the money they can put towards the car itself, which they will be be pleasantly surprised about the amount. These on-line loan companies have the advantage by being able to give individuals instant approval so there is no needless waiting around.

Selective imprinting: how the wallaby controls growth of its young

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Marsupial mothers regulate the composition of their milk so that it is optimal for the development stage of their young. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Epigenetics & Chromatin shows that, similar to the human placenta, which regulates embryonic growth and development, insulin appears to be imprinted in the marsupial mammary gland.

Insulin is well known as the hormone which regulates blood sugar levels but it also essential for proper functioning of the nervous system, protein synthesis, and for cell growth and survival. It is also required for lactation in mammals and, along with insulin growth factor 2 (IGF2), is present in milk.

Imprinting is a way of controlling gene expression. To ensure only one copy of a certain gene is active (monoallelic), the other copy is silenced, usually by methylation. Imprinting is established during sperm or egg production so that the developing embryo inherits paternally imprinted genes from its father, and maternally imprinted from its mother. Consequently the active copy is inherited only from either the mother or father. However this is complicated by imprinting being both tissue specific and dependent on the stage of development.

Insulin was thought to be only imprinted in the yolk sac of mice and humans and only in the wallaby yolk sac placenta, however, in marsupials much of this growth and development occurs after birth and is controlled instead by milk that changes composition throughout lactation. The University of Melbourne looked at whether the gene wallaby mammary gland is similarly imprinted, if it was also imprinted in the pouch young (joey), and whether this imprinting was maternally or paternally inherited.

The team found that insulin gene (INS) expression in the adult tammar wallaby mammary gland was monoallelic (one active copy), indicating imprinting and that this active copy came from the father. Paternally inherited monoallelic INS expression was also discovered in both the adult and the young tammar liver, but not in other tissues tested. IGF2 was also monoallelic in the mammary gland but the relative expression of INS and IGF2 differed during lactation. IGF2 expression in the mammary gland decreased after the first few days but INS expression increased as the babies became more mature especially between 5 and 14 weeks of age.

Prof Marilyn Renfree, who led this project commented, "This is the first indication that genomic imprinting occurs in the marsupial mammary gland and suggests that genomic imprinting in the mammary gland may be as critical for regulating post-natal growth as it is for regulating pre-natal growth in the placenta in all mammals."

New Israel - New England: Jews and Puritans in Early America

September 12, 2012 6:00PM - 7:00PM

Author Michael Hoberman will discuss his book New Israel /New England: Jews and Puritans in Early America, which examines the history of colonial New England through the lens of its first settlers. The New England Puritans? fascination with the legacy of the Jewish religion has been well documented, but their interactions with actual Jews have escaped sustained historical attention. New Israel/New England tells the story of the Sephardic merchants in Boston and Newport between the mid-seventeenth century and the American Revolution. It also explores the complex and often contradictory meanings that the Puritans attached to Judaism and the fraught attitudes that they bore toward the Jews as a people.?This event is cosponsored with the American Jewish Historical Society, New England Archives.

Russian activist's mayor bid seen as Kremlin test

KHIMKI, Russia (AP) ? What started as a small and private crusade to save a forest just outside Moscow transformed Yevgeniya Chirikova into an opposition star and her city into one of the first battlegrounds in an unprecedented wave of anti-Putin protests. Now that she is running for mayor, her supporters are wondering if the Kremlin will give her a fair chance to win.

Chirikova's campaign to lead the booming town of Khimki is seen as a test of the electability of the opposition ? and a sign of whether President Vladimir Putin is willing to tolerate dissent outside of the confines of the capital. The Kremlin has marginalized opposition figures, limiting access to media and painting them as big-city malcontents out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Russians.

The life of 35-year-old Chirikova epitomizes the civic awakening of Russia's small but growing middle class. Angry over a planned highway that would pave over a forest, the mother-of-two began to speak out in 2006, gradually emerging as a leader of a movement that has increasingly questioned the institutions that dominate daily life across Russia with little open debate.

"I'm an ordinary mom," she told The Associated Press in an interview. "There are people like me everywhere in the country. They must go into government, they must fight for their land."

On a recent afternoon, Chirikova campaigned in a way any democratic voter would recognize, surrounded by a swarm of journalists and occasionally stopping to shake hands with residents in the streets. Visiting a construction site that has replaced a Soviet-era garden, she complained about the way residents are blocked from the planning process in Khimki, which like many growing Russian towns is plagued by overdevelopment and residential high-rises that seem to sprout overnight.

Resident Serafima Naumcheva, 61, tempered her high hopes that Chirikova could beat Khimki's acting mayor Oleg Shakhov, who has Kremlin support and whose career is closely linked to the highway.

"Everyone here likes her, but people say there's no way she will be elected ? locals might as well vote for her but I don't think that the election commission will play fair," she worried.

Chirikova, who once ran for mayor before protests that began last year appeared to change the political landscape, handed in her registration papers on Monday for the Oct. 14 vote. She now has until Sept. 13 to submit 800 signatures in support. Scores of opposition candidates have been barred from running in the past by election officials who found fault with signatures or other small details.

Political analyst Dmitry Oreshkin said he was certain that pro-Kremlin election officials would not tolerate the activist at the helm of this relatively small, but key, city of around 208,000 people.

"I think she won't be allowed to win because billions of dollars are at stake there," he said, referring to the Khimki highway budget.

The highway issue has been central to Chirikova's career.

Chirikova, who holds two degrees in aviation and economics as well as an MBA, was born in Moscow and moved to Khimki shortly after giving birth to her first child. While walking one afternoon with her two daughters in the Khimki forest, the young mother saw marks on the trees and later learned that regional officials had decided the forest would be chopped down. Chirikova started printing petitions and soon formed a tight circle of supporters and followers.

The battle touched some of Russia's most intractable issues: corruption, land use and the abuse of power. The Khimki highway project offers more opportunities than usual for enrichment because the cleared land along the roadway is slated for development. Activists say that the current route benefits officials because they can buy the land in the forest for kopecks.

In November 2008, Mikhail Beketov, a local journalist who was among the first to raise the alarm about the destruction of the forest and suspicions that local officials were profiting from the project was beaten so viciously that he was left brain damaged and unable to speak. Two years later, Chirikova's fellow activist Konstantin Fetisov was beaten with a similar degree of ferocity ? he was left brain-damaged, too.

In recent years, Chirikova has received numerous threats, her husband has been beaten, and authorities have threatened to take away her children. But, she insists: "Either you go out there and do it and don't think about fear at all, or you leave the country because life is scary everywhere in Russia for anyone who holds any strong views," she said.

A turning point for her came in July 2010 when a camp of activists in the forest was rousted by masked men with Nazi tattoos, she said.

"I felt completely helpless sitting in that police station: Our camp has been destroyed, the forest was being cleared," she recalled.

But a month later the Khimki cause drew a rally of at least 3,000, the largest in many years. Banned from using any sound equipment, one of Russia's best loved rock singers Yuri Shevchuk performed an acoustic gig under the monument of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin to thousands of people ? many of whom still regard that rally as the precursor of last winter's wave of civic activism.

Chirikova's dedication won the admiration of many and brought her a prestigious environmental award, the Goldman Environmental Prize. Four days after the rally, then President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the clearing of the forest suspended and called for public discussion of the project. In December that year, however, Medvedev ordered the clearing to be resumed, saying that the project had gone too far to stop it.

When Moscow erupted with mass rallies last winter, Khimki's campaigner became one of the most recognized faces of the protest. Leading opposition figures including Alexei Navalny, Sergei Udaltsov and Russia's oldest liberal party, Yabloko, have thrown their support behind her.

Unlike her chief opponent Shakhov, Chirikova lives in a typical dilapidated neighborhood and does not own an expensive car. After a news conference in Moscow, she took the metro and a bus to get to Khimki, preoccupied with tweeting, texting and taking calls on her cell phone.

Chirikova ran for mayor in her activist days in 2009, coming in third at 15 percent behind incumbent mayor Vladimir Strelchenko, with 22 percent. A 2010 opinion poll by Levada Center showed that about 76 percent of Khimki residents believe in Chirikova's campaign to save the forest, which supporters say shows she has a strong chance of winning this time.

But liberal politician Boris Nadezhdin voiced skepticism about Chirikova's electability in his blog, saying that "people are willing to support outspoken opposition leaders at parliament elections, but are not ready to see them in a mayor's office."

Chirikova is still upbeat.

"Our main goal is to inspire, to show that we can do it," she said at a meeting with Khimki residents last week. "If we can't ? it'll be impossible to live here. We have no other choice."

(AP) ? Bethpage Black lived up its reputation because of the greens, which in some cases looked brown.

Sergio Garcia called them the fastest putting surfaces he could recall. Nick Watney referred to them as extreme. More than one player suggested the course was unplayable Saturday in The Barclays, certainly late in the afternoon as the sun baked out the public course on Long Island. And yes, there were references to Shinnecock Hills, the private club on Long Island where the greens were out of control on the final day of the 2004 U.S. Open.

Garcia managed them just fine.

With no bogeys over his final eight holes, he turned a three-shot deficit into a two-shot lead over Nick Watney with a 2-under 69. Such were the conditions that Garcia was the only player among the final 18 to finish who broke 70.

"The course is extremely firm," he said. "The greens, just probably some of the fastest greens I've ever played. Just one of those days where you knew it was going to be tough and you have to hold on very tight, and just kind of hope for the best."

Garcia went four years without winning on the PGA Tour and now has a chance to make it two in a row and return to the top 10 in the world. He was at 10-under 203, and only four players were within four shots of the lead.

Watney, who made five putts over 15 feet, went after another one on the 18th hole and this one cost him. The ball raced 10 feet by the hole, and he missed it coming back for his only official three-putt of the round. That gave him an even-par 71, though still in good shape to make a run at his first win of the year.

"The course just kind of beat you up," Watney said.

He got one small measure of revenge by making a 35-foot putt on the par-3 17th for the only birdie of the round. By late afternoon, the green was so firm that shots landing near the front pin settled in the rough or fringe behind the green.

Tiger Woods, who started the third round three shots out of the lead, three-putted for bogey three times on the front nine alone. He had another three-putt on the 14th hole, this one from 15 feet, and had a 72 that put him six shots behind.

"I don't remember blowing putts by 8 to 10 feet," Woods said. "So that was a bit of a shocker."

He knew what to expect on the first hole, when he watched Gary Christian lean on his putter and nearly fall over because the club had no traction on the slippery surface.

Kevin Stadler played early, when the greens still had some moisture, and had a remarkable round of 65 without any bogeys. He moved up from a tie for 42nd to alone in third place, three shots behind. Brandt Snedeker started strong and closed with nine pars, which was equally impressive, for a 68 that put him four back.

Phil Mickelson might still be in the game. Twice a runner-up at Bethpage Black ? both times in the U.S. Open ? Mickelson played early Saturday and had a 67. That eventually put him in the large group at 4-under 209 that included Woods, Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood and Charl Schwartzel, an impressive collection of players who have either won a major or been No. 1 in the world.

"If you play well, you can shoot a decent score, but as the day goes on, the course just gets harder and harder," Garcia said. "No doubt playing in the morning makes it a little bit easier. Even though the greens were still firm, they were probably not as firm and probably not quite as fast. It's just we know what Bethpage Black is all about. We know it's a tough golf course, and you've just got to realize that's the way it's going to be."

And so it was.

Slugger White, the tour's vice president of rules and competition, disputed the idea that course was on the verge of being unplayable.

"The golf course is not unplayable," he said.

White conceded a few greens became "crusty," particularly at Nos. 2 and 8, and that the staff was thinking there would be more cloud cover. He went out to the greens after the last group came through and said, "I saw no issues."

"Players always want firm and fast," he said. "It seems like when we give them firm and fast, they don't want firm and fast. I hear Tiger say it was too soft on Thursday. And then some guy walks off the tee and says, 'Have you guys run out of water?' Where do you go? We're doing the best we can."

Watney didn't entirely agree.

"There's firm and fast, and then there's this," Watney said. "I mean, this is pretty extreme."

Snedeker not only boosted his chances for a second win this year, it might be enough for him to be a Ryder Cup pick. He had four birdies in seven holes, and equally impressive was finishing with nine straight pars.

"Just got on a run with the putter," Snedeker said. "Was on the edge all day. Got some lucky breaks out there. You just can't hit greens out there, I don't care what anybody says. The greens are pretty much unplayable for the most part. You can't hit them. Just really, really a tough test."

And this from a guy with a 68.

The compliments were far less flattering down the leaderboard.

"The worst course setup I have ever played in 13 years on tour. They have ruined what is a great course, greens like concrete stupid pins," Ian Poulter said on Twitter after his 76. He followed that with another tweet: "played poorly today & no excuse for my play I was rubbish. but I do know my job & trade & the golf course today was borderline unplayable."

Most extreme was the turnaround at the top.

Watney had a three-shot lead walking off the 10th hole. Three holes later, it was gone.

With his first poor swing of the day, Watney went from the middle of the 11th fairway to the right bunker and made bogey, while Garcia holed a 20-foot birdie putt. Watney followed with a tee shot well to the left to set up another bogey, and the lead was gone. And on the par-5 13th, Garcia made birdie to take the lead.

But it wasn't easy.

"This will tell you how fast it was," Garcia said. "Usually when you are putting on fast greens, you have an idea where the ball is going to stop. And today, you didn't. You thought the ball was going to stop 2 feet behind the hole, and it went 6. It was pretty much as simple as that.

"Was it unfair? I wouldn't say it was unfair," he said. "It was borderline. It was very close. It felt like the greens were very close to Shinnecock Hills at the U.S. Open."

Ernie Els might have summed up the day better than anyone. He finished his 72, sat down for lunch and said, "The boys out there are going to have some fun."

Simplifying genetic codes to look back in time

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers show simpler versions of the universal genetic code can still function in protein synthesis. In addition to understanding early primordial organisms, the research could lead to applications preventing non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers at the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code, created by knocking out certain amino acids, can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis [1].

The researchers conducted experiments altering the genetic code in a test tube. They removed the amino acid tryptophan and discovered that the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There will be also numerous applications for simplified genetic strains in laboratory experiments, which could potentially prevent non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Background and future developments

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers of the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code -- created by knocking out certain amino acids -- can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis. The researchers conducted cell-free experiments altering the genetic code.

All current life forms on Earth have 20 amino acids in their genetic code. However, scientists believe that this was not always the case, and that organisms evolved from simpler genetic codes with fewer amino acids. Amino acids are linked in accordance with codons -- a 3-letter combination of the four base nucleotides (G, A, T and C) in a genetic code. There are 64 possible codons, and so most amino acids are produced by several different codons, except for tryptophan and methionine, which are generated by just one codon each. Tryptophan is thought to be the most recent amino acid to become part of the universal genetic code.

Kiga and his team took the codon for tryptophan, and reassigned it to code for the amino acid alanine instead. They discovered the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before. The researchers also reassigned another codon originally for the amino acid cysteine and replaced it with serine. This simplified code without cysteine was able to synthesize an active enzyme.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There are also numerous applications for simplified genetic codes in laboratory experiments and clinical trials.

Before emergence of the current universal genetic code, primitive organisms that may have used only 19 amino acids could benefit from horizontal gene transfer, where cells transfer genetic material between one another. This is a key method used by bacteria to develop resistance to drugs. An organism with the current universal genetic code for 20 amino acids would have competitive advantages in its ability to synthesize proteins, but could not engage in genetic transfer with the rest of the population. Only when a suitably large gene pool of organisms with 20 amino acids is available could horizontal transfer occur between these life forms and they could then thrive. This implies that organisms with a simpler genetic code could be used as a barrier in laboratory experiments, preventing new genetically modified strains from escaping to the natural world.

Priebus: Akin stay risks GOP control of Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican National Party chair Reince Priebus says that Todd Akin's insistence on staying in the Missouri Senate race could cost the party its chance to win control of the Senate.

Priebus says Akin "should put the mission of liberty and freedom ahead of himself" and leave the race.

Akin has ignored calls from national GOP leaders, including Priebus and presidential contender Mitt Romney, to leave the race against incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. Republicans hope to pick off her seat and capture a Senate majority in the November elections.

Akin has apologized repeatedly for comments made a week ago that pregnancy in a "legitimate rape" is rare because the female body tries "to shut that whole thing down."

Priebus made his comments Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

(AP) ? Pakistan is investigating whether the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network, which has been blamed for high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan, was killed in a U.S. drone strike this week, officials said Saturday.

If confirmed, the death of Badruddin Haqqani, who has been described as the network's day-to-day operations commander, would mark a major blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, and viewed by the U.S. as a powerful enemy in neighboring Afghanistan.

Two Pakistani intelligence officials said Saturday they are 90 percent certain Badruddin was killed Tuesday in North Waziristan in an American missile attack. They said their information was based on reports received from their agents in the field but acknowledged they haven't spoken to anyone who has seen the body.

A senior Taliban commander said a U.S. drone strike killed Badruddin. There was no independent confirmation, and the U.S. does not comment publicly on the controversial drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.

All spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the news.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan. He is believed to be the network's day-to-day operations commander, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War.

Replacing him would be a challenge but not impossible, said Daniel Markey, a Pakistan expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"The question would be whether anyone would be as trusted, as well-placed, would have forged the kind of longstanding connections and would have the kind of pedigree that he has," said Markey. "This is a big hit if it's true but it's not going to put them out of business."

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter, David Rohde, the department said.

"During his captivity, Badruddin forced Rohde to make videos and write letters demanding money and a prisoner exchange as conditions for his release. Badruddin threatened Rohde's two Afghan companions in order to compel him to cooperate, and threatened to kill all three of them if his demands were not met," the State Department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

The U.S. faults Islamabad for what it says is a failure to go after the group, which has essentially made its base in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region, which borders Afghanistan.

Pakistan has said its forces, which have been fighting an insurgency that has already cost more than 30,000 Pakistani lives, are overstretched and unable to launch an attack in North Waziristan. Recently U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said Pakistani officials indicated that they would carry out an operation in North Waziristan soon but there has been no indication that a large-scale operation is in the offing.

It's unclear whether the U.S. received any assistance from the Pakistani military in tracking down Badruddin. If they had cooperated on the hit, it would mark a significant improvement in U.S.-Pakistan relations. The strike came the same week that NATO forces in Afghanistan killed a senior Pakistani Taliban commander operating in Afghanistan. Pakistan has long been pushing the U.S. and NATO to do more to combat Pakistani Taliban militants that it says use Afghanistan as a safe haven.

However, moving against the Haqqanis would be an about-face for Pakistan, which is believed to view its relationship with the network as important in helping shape Afghanistan after American and other international troops leave. The Pakistani military also faces the risk that if the Haqqanis are challenged, they will likely turn their considerable resources and expertise to attacking Pakistani targets, something the network has rarely done.
