A Must Read For Any Pro Athlete Looking To Buy Or Sell A Home
The team here at the Realtor.com blog are shameless real estate snoops. We?ve checked out every celebrity home that hits the market and we have a particular weakness for sports listings. That?s why we perked up when we heard about a new show, Scoring the Deal premiering this December on HGTV. The show features Jason Abrams, a Realtor dubbed the ?Jerry Maguire of Real Estate.
With over 12 years experience and several offices around the country, Jason Abrams offers concierge style real estate services. He is a former Keller Williams office manager of a 100+ agent office and a founding member and principal owner of the largest Keller Williams conglomerate in Michigan, The Abrams Team?, as well as a former Chairman of their Agent Leadership Council. He is an expert in buying and selling homes worth millions of dollars for pro athletes and ?Scoring the Deal? follows Jason and his partner, Kristen Cook, into the behind-the-scenes world of pro-sports real estate. We asked Jason five questions about what it?s really like working with his high-profile clients:
When you deal with high profile clients how do you protect their confidentiality?
The truth is that if the press really wants to find out where a player is living?they will. However, generally speaking, we use the standard approved board purchase agreements in each city that we are in with the addition of a rather stringent non-disclosure statement to be signed by all parties. We also advise many of our clients to close on their home in the name of an LLC to avoid those that are searching public records for our buyers? names.
When you deal with clients who are relocating to a new city they may be unfamiliar with what information do you provide them with to help them get acclimated?
As our clients are mostly professional athletes we show them where the practice facility is, where the stadium is, where the best mall is, and where the closest airports are. If you think about it these are the same things that the average transferee would want to know, ?where do I work and where do I play??
Your high profile clients often don?t have a lot of time to look at properties, how do help them narrow down the list before they look?
Before our clients arrive in a city rest assured that The Abrams Team has been there for days previewing every home that is close to matching their chosen criteria. By the time our client lands at the airport and we pick them up in our limousine we have the whole city narrowed down to the best 3-5 homes for them. Nine times out of ten we are spot on with our suggestions and reduce months of house hunting to less then five hours of fun!
You?ve worked with a lot of sports stars, what is the amenity they look for most in a home?
Privacy is huge for our clients, after the last whistle is blown and the last autograph of the day is signed they need to go home and find the sanctuary that we would hope all of us feel when we enter our own homes. Next is closet space, big guys with big paychecks equals big clothes and big quantities!
Here at Realtor.com we?ve covered a lot of sports real estate and noticed that many stars highly customize their homes. Have you noticed this and what advice do you give to professional athletes about potential remodels?
I?m not sure how many homes the average realtor will sell in their career that will have a stripper pole in it, but we see it all the time! Naturally, the more neutral a home is the easier it is to sell and the broader the market appeal will be. However, you only live once and if you can?t install an erotic dance pole, paint your living room black and hot pink, or cast your our own name into your marble floor when you are in your 20?s then when can you do it?!?!? Have fun and enjoy your home and the things you fill it with, just remember that the ultimate home accessory are people that love and care about you, without those people all it will ever be is sticks and stones and property taxes.
