Cincinnati native, music mogul and X-Factor judge Antonio ?L.A.? Reid will receive this year?s President?s Merit Award, which honors industry icons, from Clive Davis and the Recording Academy during this week?s buildup to?Sunday?s Grammy Awards. ?The 2013 Grammy Award Foundation will honor Reid, who is chairman and CEO of Epic Records,? in a pre-Grammy, star-studded bash the night before the 55th Grammy Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The ?55th Annual Grammy Awards? airs live from Los Angeles at 8 p.m. Sunday on CBS/Channel 12.
The pre-Grammy event will be attended by the world?s most renowned artists and top industry VIPs in music, film, television and new media.
?I?m humbled,? said the Hughes High School alum this morning on?the Today Show, adding that he hoped being an ?icon? didn?t mean that people thought he was retiring.
One of the most powerful executives in the music industry and a triple Grammy-winner, the star-maker has discovered talents such as Usher, Avril Lavigne and OutKast. Throughout his illustrious career, Reid has produced and co-written more than 30 No. 1 singles.
But Reid has never forgotten his Cincinnati roots, and was known to make visits to Cincinnati on his mother?s birthday each April. His mother, Emma Reid, passed away in June.
The nickname ?L.A.? was given to him by Larry Middleton, ?a singer, songwriter, guitar player and friend that I grew up with in Cincinnati. He never told anybody why,? he told me in a 2007 interview. Other tidbits from that interview:
Education: Hughes High School class of ?74 but left before graduating (obtained diploma later); Harvard Business School Advance Management Program.
Career highlights: 1981, co-founded Cincinnati band the Deele with Kenneth ?Babyface? Edmonds; 1989, co-founded (with Edmonds) LaFace Records in Atlanta; 2000, named president and CEO of BMG?s Arista Records, becoming one of the most powerful African-Americans in the music industry; 2004, named chairman of Island Def Jam, a division of Universal Music Group, the world?s largest record company.
As chairman of Island Def Jam Music Group, Reid oversaw Mariah Carey?s comeback, helped Kanye West achieve multi-platinum status and worldwide recognition; nurtured Bon Jovi?s platinum-selling album Have A Nice Day and their platinum follow-up Lost Highway; managed the Killers? 2004 triple-platinum debut Hot Fuss and Fall Out Boy?s 2005 major label debut album; and he signed and oversaw Justin Bieber?s multi-platinum Grammy-nominated My World and Never Say Never, and Rihanna?s succession of worldwide multi-platinum best-sellers.
From there, he went to Epic Records. He recently announced that he will be leaving the X Factor.
Cincinnati musical influences: ?It was everything. It was the rock concerts. It was the Grand Funk Railroad concerts, the Edgar Winter concerts, the James Brown concerts, the Yes concerts, the Return to Forever and Weather Report concerts, it was Sly and the Family Stone at Cincinnati Gardens ? it was all the music around me.?
The award hails significant contributions to the music industry and the impact his efforts have had on music and the industry. Past recipients include Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, Sir Richard Branson, Clive Davis, Ahmet Ertegun, David Geffen, Berry Gordy, Doug Morris, and Mo Ostin.
